Road closed after stolen truck crashes, spills chlorine canisters

A stolen pick-up truck with a trailer attached dumped canisters of chlorine tablets onto Desert Inn Road early Friday after the thief had an accident, Metro Police said.

Police received reports at 4:10 a.m. of loud screeching and saw sparks coming from the truck near Desert Inn and Paradise roads.

It is unclear what caused the accident, police said.

Canisters of chlorine, reported stolen from a local pool supply store, spilled into the street, causing the closure of Desert Inn Road, between Valley View Boulevard and Paradise Road, police said. The chemicals remained sealed in their containers.

Metro Police said all roads were due to be reopened by 10 a.m.

Whoever was driving the truck and any passengers fled after the accident, authorities said.

“Right now, it looks like someone stole the truck, which had a trailer attached. The merchandise happened to be on the truck or trailer, but there is nothing to indicate that it was taken for a specific reason,” Metro Officer Jose Hernandez said.
