3 relieved of command as result of Marine training accident in Nevada

Three officers at Camp Lejeune have been relieved of command following a March training accident in Nevada in which seven Marines were killed.

The battalion commander, a company commander and an infantry weapons officer have been relieved following the March 18 training accident at Hawthorne Army Depot.

Marine spokesman Lt. Oliver David said Wednesday that Lt. Col. Andrew McNulty, Capt. Kelby Breivogel and Chief Warrant Officer 3 Douglas Derring have been relieved.

David said the decision was made by Brig. Gen. James Lukeman, commander of the 2nd Marine Division. David said no charges are expected under the Uniform Code of Military Justice.

The accident occurred when a 60 millimeter mortar tube exploded during a field exercise. Seven Marines and a sailor were also wounded.
