Passenger dies, driver injured in Maryland Parkway crash

Fatal crash

A woman died and another person was critically injured in an early morning crash today.

Witnesses reportedly told Metro Police that they saw a car and a pickup speeding north along North Maryland Parkway just south of East Bonanza Road when both motorists suddenly lost control as they approached a curve.

The car in which the woman was riding flipped over counter-clockwise and slid northwest, traveling onto the center median and hitting a light pole. The pickup flipped over in the same direction and slid onto the median.

It was not clear Saturday morning whether the drivers had been racing.

The woman, 19, had been in the car’s passenger seat. The driver of the car, 22, was rushed to University Medical Center with critical injuries.

Police arrested the driver of the pickup for allegedly driving recklessly and under the influence of alcohol. He is 17.

The incident was Metro’s 86th traffic-related fatality this year.
