Las Vegas recognized as bicycle-friendly city

The League of American Bicyclists has declared Las Vegas and three local businesses as bicycle friendly.

Businesses recognized were the Cashman Equipment Co., Las Vegas Cyclery and the Bike Shop.

Las Vegas has made strides in improving access for bikers, most visibly with the addition of miles of green-painted bike lanes downtown. The city has 390 miles of bicycle lanes, with plans to add 50 more miles by the end of next year.

The city also received a $500,000 award from the Federal Highway Administration on Wednesday to install bike lockers and racks downtown.

“Being bike friendly is good for Las Vegas,” Mayor Carolyn Goodman said in a statement. “We provide amenities such as convenient bike racks at our facilities, as well as bikes and helmets for employees to use when they need transportation during work hours, helping to preserve our air quality and reduce traffic congestion.”

Reno and the Regional Transportation Commission have previously been recognized by the organization.
