Joe Downtown: Veterans to get special concert at Fremont Street Experience

If you saw "Forrest Gump" you wouldn't forget his paraplegic pal, Lt. Dan Taylor, who gradually came to grips with losing his legs in Vietnam.

Actor Gary Sinise, who played Taylor, started the Lt. Dan Band in 2004 and has played for and supported wounded veterans ever since.

Saturday night, he's bringing his band to the First Street stage on the Fremont Street Experience. Wounded military veterans from around the country are in Las Vegas Friday through Tuesday for the fifth annual "A Salute to the Troops," sponsored by MGM Resorts International, the USO and American Airlines. The Gary Sinise Foundation is also a sponsor.

The Lt. Dan Band will play for an estimated 2 1/2 hours, starting at 5 p.m.

Joe Schoenmann doesn’t just cover downtown, he lives and works there. Schoenmann is Greenspun Media Group’s embedded downtown journalist, working from an office in the Emergency Arts building.
