Centennial High football coach Leon Evans sensed there was something building as his team continued to rally from a 17-point deficit today against Legacy.

The comeback reached its crescendo when senior Lantz Worthington ripped a 91-yard touchdown run. The Bulldogs followed it up with a defensive stop, which led to a 28-17 victory over the Longhorns to give the Bulldogs a home playoff game next week..

“Once Lantz broke that (run) off, the energy continued to grow,” Evans said.

Centennial enters the Sunset Regional playoffs as the No. 2 seed, where it will host Shadow Ridge next Friday.

The Longhorns (6-3, 3-2 Sunset Southwest) dominated early on, jumping out to a 17-0 lead behind the legs of Casey Hughes and DeMichael Walker.

Centennial’s defense figured it out in the second half, limiting Hughes and Walker’s impact, allowing the Bulldogs (5-4, 4-1) to come back.

C.J. Thompson accounted for three touchdowns (2 rushing, 1 passing), including a 1-yard dive following a special teams fumble recovery on the Legacy one-yard line with five minutes to play to seal the game.

The win sets up a rematch between Centennial and Shadow Ridge. The teams played earlier this season with the Bulldogs prevailing, 40-7.

“They’re definitely going to have the revenge factor on their side,” Evans said.

Legacy will travel to Arbor View in the Sunset Region playoff quarterfinals.
