Tornadoes and tirades

Las Vegas Sun sports reporters Ray Brewer and Case Keefer open this week's show by discussing the top-ranked high school football team in the nation, Florida's Booker T. Washington, coming to town Friday to take on Bishop Gorman. They then work their way into other pertinent topics, highlighted by a discussion of the definition of "athlete" and whether Green Valley can match Canyon Springs' "quickness".

Antraye Johnson pulled off a rare trifecta in Basic’s 53-28 victory over host Eldorado Friday night.

The electric quarterback scored a rushing touchdown, a passing touchdown and a return touchdown — all in the first half.

“He just does it for us week-in and week-out,” Basic coach Jeff Cahill said. “At halftime, we decided to take him out and see if we could move the ball without him.”

It wasn’t as if the game was still up for grabs. Johnson had the Wolves leading the Sundevils 43-14 after 24 minutes of play.

David Garza, who caught the early-game touchdown strike from Johnson, came in relief and threw one of his own to Aaron Bashaw.

Basic was thankful to improve to 2-3 on the season and win its first Southeast Division contest with the Battle for Boulder Highway rivalry game against Foothill up next week.

“It was a good win,” Cahill said. “We’re looking forward to getting better.”
