Letter to the editor:

Shut down your own paychecks

Our political system was based upon, in addition to everything else, checks and balances.

We have created a distortion by allowing political parties to create “safe districts” so that they are practically voter-proof.

We must do something to break that system. I suggest that if Congress shuts down for any reason that it triggers the following:

1. No representative receives a salary.

2. Many of today’s politicians are so wealthy that their salary doesn’t matter. I suggest a system of fines, based on net worth. So, for example, a politician worth more than $100 million pays a fine (say $10,000 to $100,000) per day until Congress reopens.

I guarantee that this nonsense of shutting down the government will cease and the issues will be quickly resolved.

The challenge is to implement this, as we know that no politician will ever vote to institute this change.

The people are powerless to get this implemented, and we suffer for it.
