Letter to the editor:

‘Me, me, me’ attitude gets taxing

If one were to look more closely at the reasons for the recent government shutdown, one concept comes across very clearly: taxes for the funding of Obamacare; the overhaul of the United States medical system has center stage, and a lot of people find it suspect.

Three or four generations ago, younger professionals and the working class paid enough taxes to provide the funding for those benefits/“entitlements” to the older generation of retirees — their parents and grandparents. It was like a pyramid — many at the base supporting fewer at the top.

Today’s me-first thinking puts morality on the back burner and the pyramid has been inverted. Today, people are unwilling to help support those less-fortunate individuals. Obamacare and the attendant taxes to fund it are labeled socialism.

There is only one reason universal health care works in other western democracies such as Great Britain, France, Germany and Canada. Despite alleged long waits for care, those countries’ populations have a different attitude regarding taxes.
