Police lift school lockdowns prompted by reports of nearby shooting

Updated Tuesday, Sept. 3, 2013 | 1:46 p.m.

Metro Police have lifted lockdowns ordered at four elementary schools in the northeast valley while officers investigated a reported shooting nearby.

Four schools — Martin Luther King, Myrtle Tate, Sandy S. Miller and Ruben P. Diaz — were locked down until shortly after noon.

Numerous people in the 4500 block of Little Finch Lane called police starting at 10:03 a.m. to report hearing multiple shots fired, Metro spokeswoman Laura Meltzer said. That location is near Owens Avenue and Lamb Boulevard.

Officers responded but didn’t find anyone there, Meltzer said.

Several minutes later, an accident involving a brown van — which had been described as a possible suspect vehicle — occurred about a mile north, near the intersection of Marion Drive and Judson Avenue, Meltzer said.

At the accident scene, officers located and took into custody one suspect, Meltzer said. Another suspect remains outstanding.

Officers established a perimeter in the area and used police dogs to try to find the second suspect, Meltzer said.
