Man wounded, cars hit by gunfire in northeast valley

Updated Thursday, Sept. 5, 2013 | 4:39 p.m.

Metro Police are investigating a shooting today in the northeast valley in which one man was wounded and several vehicles parked on the street were riddled with bullets.

Police were searching for a man identified as a suspect in the shooting, Metro Officer Laura Meltzer said.

Police responded to the 4900 block of East Owens Avenue at about 1 p.m., after receiving several calls reporting gunshots, Meltzer said.

At the same time, a person called police and said he had been shot in the incident and was headed to University Medical Center, she said.

Officers made contact with the man at the hospital, but it was not clear what involvement he had in the incident, Meltzer said. Initial reports indicated his injuries were not life-threatening.

Meltzer said it’s unclear what transpired, but several vehicles parked on the street were struck by bullets.

Police were still investigating as of about 3:30 p.m., and Owens Avenue remained shut between Marion Drive and Nellis Boulevard.

“It’s a very active case at this point,” Meltzer said.

Clark County School District spokeswoman Melinda Malone said nearby Manuel Cortez Elementary, Sandy Miller Elementary, Lynch Elementary and Monaco Middle School were placed on lockdown for about 30 minutes because of the shooting.
