    Rivalries and rantings

Las Vegas Sun sports reporters Ray Brewer and Case Keefer go through the schedule and discuss all of Saturday's games after looking back at the major topics to come out of the first two weeks of football.

When other high school football rivalry games in Nevada haven’t been able to survive the test of time, the Henderson Bowl between Basic and Green Valley highs is still going strong.

It’s the most important game on the schedule for the players on both teams — an intense rivalry where emotions always run high and players perform at their best. And it’s been that way since 1991, when Green Valley became Henderson’s second high school to create a natural rivalry with Basic, which opened in the 1940s.

Henderson Bowl XXIII is tonight at Green Valley, highlighting a Saturday slate of 13 games across Southern Nevada. Green Valley is looking for its third straight victory in the series they lead 14-8.

With the teams being in separate leagues, Henderson Bowl is the first game of the season for Basic. Green Valley, ranked No. 3 in the Sun’s preseason poll, debuted last week with a loss to Basha, Ariz. Simply playing last week, however, gives Green Valley an advantage because it won’t have the first-game jitters or miscues.

The Henderson Bowl isn’t the lone rivalry game on the schedule.

The Cleat Game between Chaparral and host Eldorado dates back to the 1970s, and the neighborhood rivalry between Silverado and host Liberty could be the week’s most competitive game.
