Las Vegas Sun sports reporters spend extra time this week discussing impending matchups between Green Valley and Coronado and Centennial and Arbor View. They also look back on the Henderson Bowl and Bishop Gorman's thrilling victory. ***Note: We apologize for the audio-level issues and are looking into correcting the malfunction for next week. Cimarron-Memorial High quarterback Derek Morefield amassed three total touchdowns in a 40-0 victory Thursday at Sierra Vista High.

Morefield finished 6-of-11 for 172 yards and the three scores, two of them passes to receiver D.J. Watson. The Spartans’ offense was balanced, though, as Michael Barnson tallied 159 yards and two touchdowns on 15 carries.

“We were really balanced and able to do things equally well,” Cimarron-Memorial coach John Parcells said.

The Spartans’ defense held Sierra Vista (0-1) to 121 total yards, all of them on the ground. Meanwhile Cimarron-Memorial (1-0) piled up 475 yards on offense.

Sierra Vista stays home to face Rancho High next week. This was the 2013 debut for both teams and outside of a few silly penalties the Spartans seemed to be in near midseason form.

They’ll find out very quickly if that’s the case as they hit the road next week to exact some revenge in the Duel in the Desert rivalry against Cheyenne High. The Desert Shields have won the past two rivalry matchups.

“Cheyenne’s going to be really fired up,” Parcells said. “They have a lot of speed.”
