Two men, believed to be jaywalking, seriously hurt in separate wrecks

Two men were seriously hurt late Tuesday after being struck while jaywalking in separate and unrelated wrecks that occurred less than three miles apart, police said.

The first man was attempting to cross the street at the 1400 block of East Flamingo Road near Maryland Parkway at 8:19 p.m. when he was hit by a black Honda sedan, Lt. Mark Reddon said.

He was taken to Sunrise Hospital in critical condition.

“We were told it does not look good for him,” Reddon said.

The second wreck occurred about an hour later at the 100 block of Tropicana Avenue near Koval Lane, where a man believed to be homeless also was seen jaywalking across the road when he was hit by a vehicle.

Paramedics at the scene told police he did not appear to be critically injured, though the impact may have broken his neck.

“He was moving his extremities and moving and talking,” Reddon said. “But we’re still getting him to the hospital.”
