Accident

A 2-year-old girl died late Thursday after wandering into the street and being struck by a minivan, according to Metro Police.

The accident happened at 9:30 p.m. on Pecos Road, just south of Dillon Avenue, in the northeast valley.

The girl was alone in the street at the time of the accident, police said. It appears she accidentally got out of her nearby home without caregivers’ knowledge, Metro spokesman Larry Hadfield said.

Hadfield called the incident a “tragic accident” and not the result of abuse or neglect.

A preliminary investigation indicates the toddler was in the northbound, right travel lane of Pecos Road when a 2000 Ford Windstar hit her, police said. A second vehicle, which did not stop, possibly struck her a second time, police said.

The 30-year-old man driving the minivan remained at the scene, police said.

The child was pronounced dead at the scene. The Clark County Coroner’s Office will release her name, pending notification of relatives.

It was the 29th fatal accident in Metro’s jurisdiction this year.
