UNLV’s head coach Dave Rice has a few words for his player Kendall Smith #0 during their home opener versus Morehead State on Friday, November 14, 2014.

Kendall Smith’s UNLV career is over. The sophomore guard asked UNLV coach Dave Rice earlier today for a release after Smith stayed back in Las Vegas during the Rebels’ road trip to Arizona State, where they lost 77-55.

Kendall Smith was UNLV’s starting point guard at the beginning of last season before an injury and struggles shifted him down the rotation. This year he was initially the backup for senior Cody Doolin before freshman Pat McCaw moved into that spot.

In two appearances this season, Smith scored one point. He had missed the previous three games with what Rice called an ankle injury.

This is the 10th transfer in Rice’s three-plus seasons at UNLV, which has been a prime example of the growing transfer trend across the country.

“I choose to just look at guys and appreciate the contributions they made while they were here,” Rice said. “It’s a situation where I want guys to be here, I want guys to want to be here for a lot of years and finish their careers here, but when they don’t want to be here I understand it and we wish them the best when they move on.”

Smith’s destination is unknown. UNLV now has nine scholarship players available this season.

Guys expected to be in the rotation at point guard next season include McCaw, senior Jerome Seagears, junior Daquan Cook and signee Jalen Poyser.
