Boy saves Reno classmate with Heimlich maneuver

RENO — A Reno middle schooler is being hailed as a hero for performing the Heimlich maneuver on a classmate who was choking on a hamburger.

Eighth grader Edwin Mendoza told reporters he was eating lunch Monday at Depoali Middle School when he started choking.

He says he tried to make it to the water fountain, but his vision went blurry and he felt like he was going to pass out.

That's when classmate Zack Jensen noticed Mendoza holding his throat, asked him what was wrong and jumped into action.

Jensen says he did the Heimlich maneuver and the food came flying out.

Jensen credits his mother with teaching him the lifesaving technique, and says he also learned about it from the movie "Mrs. Doubtfire."
