Charge against jailed Nellis staff sergeant could escalate after baby son’s death

The baby Metro Police allege was abused earlier this month by a Nellis Air Force staff sergeant died Monday night.

Three-month-old Aiden James Leach was airlifted on Feb. 1 to Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center in critical condition. Police accused Aiden’s father, Staff Sgt. Andrew Leach, 31, of causing severe head trauma and other injuries to Aiden, according to a Metro Police arrest report.

Leach told Metro he dropped Aiden while preparing him for a bath. He said the baby spit up, his arms and legs stiffened and he stopped breathing, according to the report. Leach attempted to revive his son, and then called 911.

Leach denied causing any injuries to his son other than what he described, the report said.

He is currently charged with child abuse with substantial bodily harm. An amendment to his charges to reflect the Aiden’s death has not yet been filed, Clark County District Attorney spokeswoman Tess Driver said.

Leach is scheduled for a preliminary hearing on Thursday. He remains in the Clark County Detention Center on a $20,000 bond.
