letter to the editor:

Spending too much to put on a show

About these Olympic Games, I heard one of the commentators from Sochi say: “Did the Russians really need to spend $50 billion to show off to the world? Why not 10 billion on the games and the other money to help feed the poor?” The Russians are not alone on this spending spree.

We Americans are guilty of this, as are the other countries where these games are held. I guess with more than a billion people watching this event, every country wants to make a great impression to the rest of the world. It’s like my mom used to say, “Company’s comin’.”

As long as everything is safe for the athletes who compete, maybe the dog-and-pony-show part can be less impressive and expensive.

Some things never change, and this spending for the games won’t either, but we could help feed the poor and those who really deserve it, especially the hungry kids in the world.

What do you think?
