Car chase leads to barricade situation, school lockdowns

Barricade situation ends

Metro Police arrested a person suspected of stealing a car on Monday nearly four hours after he evaded Nevada Highway Patrol in a car chase.

Highway Patrol troopers initially attempted to pull over the suspect about 10:45 a.m. at Spring Mountain Road and Arville Street. The suspect sped away and escaped the troopers before ditching the Honda Accord in a parking lot in the 4500 block of Pennwood Avenue, Trooper Loy Hixson said.

A Metro helicopter tracked the car to the parking lot, where officers determined it was stolen. Clark High School, Cashman Middle School, Roundy Elementary School and Wynn Elementary School were placed on lockdown from 11:30 a.m. to 2:15 p.m. while the suspect remained barricaded inside a nearby apartment.

The suspect surrendered without further incident and was placed under arrest shortly before 2:15 p.m.
