Floyd Mayweather Jr., left, fights WBC/WBA 154-pound champion Canelo Alvarez during their title fight at the MGM Grand Garden Arena Saturday, Sept. 14, 2013.

The mystery is over: Floyd Mayweather's opponent this spring will be Marcos Maidana.

"I will be fighting Marcos Maidana May 3rd on Pay-per-view Showtime/CBS," Mayweather announced late this afternoon on his Twitter feed.

Mayweather, 45-0 as a professional, had signed on for the early May fight at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, but no opponent was booked, apparently, until today.

Earlier this month, Mayweather even took to social media to gauge fans' support for his next opponent.

“I'm going to let the fans vote. Tell me who I should fight next. (Amir) Khan or (Marcos) Maidana?” Mayweather tweeted on Feb. 1.

Khan pulled in over 60 percent of 35,000 votes the poll, according to published reports, but in the end, the Argentinian Maidana was Mayweather's choice.

Maidana, 35-3 won the WBA welterweight championship with a 12-round unanimous decision over Adrien Broner on Dec. 14 in San Antonio.

The winner of the May 3 title fight will be the unified WBC, WBA and Ring welterweight champion.
