A burro that wandered onto Blue Diamond Road today caused a series of wrecks that left a woman seriously injured and closed the road for hours.

A car headed west on Blue Diamond, near the junction of State Routes 159 and 160, initially hit the burro about 5:30 p.m., Nevada Highway Patrol Trooper Loy Hixson said.

An eastbound pickup then hit the animal, sending the burro into the path of another westbound vehicle that also hit the animal.

A woman in the first car was trapped in the vehicle, and first responders used special equipment to pry her out before she was flown to University Medical Center with serious injuries.

No one else was seriously hurt. The animal was killed.

Blue Diamond Road was closed in both directions until about 9:30 p.m.

Officials had initially reported that the animal involved was a deer.
