Nevada Bar panel ends Whittemore license hearing

RENO, Nev. (AP) — A Nevada State Bar panel has 30 days to recommend whether lawyer, developer and former political powerbroker Harvey Whittemore should keep his law license or be suspended or disbarred. Disciplinary hearings ended Wednesday in Reno, and it'll be up to the Nevada Supreme Court to take the State Bar recommendation and make a final decision on Whittemore's future. Whittemore was convicted last May and sentenced to two years in prison for funneling more than $130,000 to the campaign of Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid in 2007. A federal judge is letting Whittemore remain free while his appeal is decided. The Reno Gazette-Journal reports (http://on.rgj.com/1cZdGym ) that Assistant Bar Counsel Patrick King told the disciplinary panel that letting a convicted felon keep his law license would undermine the legal profession.
