Firefighters knock down blaze at vacant 3rd Street apartment building

Las Vegas firefighters are investigating a blaze that damaged a vacant apartment building Saturday night, according to Las Vegas Fire and Rescue.

Dispatchers received reports that the two story concrete building at 1424 S. 3rd Street, near Utah Avenue and Las Vegas Boulevard, was on fire at 10:29 p.m. Saturday night.

Firefighters arrived to find the building encompassed in a thick smoke, making it difficult to assess the fire's extent. This led them to believe that the flames had started on the building's exterior, the department said.

Further examination revealed the fire was actually in the building's stairwell and extended into two of the apartment's 12 units, as well as the attic.

Firefighters were able to control the blaze in a matter of minutes.

There were no reported injuries, and no estimate of the damage was available at this time.

Firefighters believe the vacant building was being inhabited by homeless people. Two workers were reportedly staying in the building to do renovations, but they could not be located.
