NEW YORK — New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio (dih BLAH'-zee-oh) says an "unacceptable bureaucracy" led to the lack of security cameras in a public housing elevator where a child was stabbed to death.
A 6-year-old boy was killed and a 7-year-old girl was critically injured in Sunday's attack. Their assailant remains at large. There weren't any security cameras in the elevator in Brooklyn's Boulevard Houses.
De Blasio on Tuesday criticized the housing authority for not spending the $27 million still available in its budget for security improvements such as cameras. He says the money could install cameras in nearly 50 housing developments.
The first-term Democrat acknowledges his administration hasn't acted swiftly to fix things. He accepts responsibility, saying "the buck stops" with him.
