A Las Vegas man accused of stealing the identity of an assistant U.S. attorney and using it to perpetuate a scam has been ordered to prison.
Nevada Attorney General Catherine Cortez Masto announced this week that 46-year-old Jamal Eljwaidi was sentenced to 4-10 years in prison. He must also pay $841,000 in restitution.
Prosecutors say he defrauded investors by promising them large returns, and used the federal prosecutor's identity to bolster credibility.
The case was investigated by Secretary of State Ross Miller's office. Miller called Eljwaidi a serial offender who has continued criminal activity even after multiple convictions.
Eljwaidi, who also goes by the name Jean Marc Eljwaidi, pleaded guilty to one felony count of identity theft in the case.
