Updated Tuesday, June 17, 2014 | 5:03 p.m.

A retired member of Metro Police’s K9 unit died today after being attacked by a swarm of bees.

News of the death of “Micky” was reported this afternoon on the Friends For Las Vegas Police K9's Facebook page.

“Today we are sad to announce the passing of Micky due to complications from a bee attack,” the post read. “Micky just recently retired from patrol work. This morning a swarm of bees entered his yard and attacked him. His handler rushed to his aid also getting stung. With broken hearts we give thanks for Micky's service to Las Vegas. He served this city well and on a number of occasions saved his handler's life. He will be greatly missed.”

In a statement, Metro said two other active K-9 dogs were injured during the incident and were being cared for by a veterinarian. The dogs' handler also suffered bee stings trying to help the dogs. The extent of his stings was not disclosed.

Micky began work with Metro in 2005 and retired March.
