Two children dead in blaze

Two children, a 4-year-old boy and a 2-year-old girl, are dead after an overnight fire in the northwest valley.

Las Vegas Fire & Rescue spokesman Tim Szymanski said crews from Clark County and Las Vegas responded about 1:10 a.m. to the fire in a single-story home in the 5700 block of North Riley Street, near North Durango Drive and West Ann Road.

Jon Klassen, deputy chief of the Clark County Fire Department, said initial reports to the Fire Alarm Office stated that a bedroom at the single-family house was on fire and that the children were trapped inside.

Metro Police officers were the first to arrive and enter the house, but the fire prevented them from locating the children, Klassen said.

Klassen said the identities of the children would be released later.

Las Vegas Fire & Rescue units arrived shortly thereafter and immediately entered the bedroom through a window and recovered both children. The children were pronounced dead on the scene.

Two adults in the home at the time of the fire tried frantically to extinguish the blaze from an exterior window with water; they were transported to University Medical Center with unknown injuries, Klassen said.

Clark County fire officials are investigating.
