Police make 29 felony drug arrests on EDC’s opening night

Metro Police arrested 29 people for felony drug offenses on the first day of the Electric Daisy Carnival.

Metro made 22 of those arrests by 11:30 p.m. Friday night. Despite the arrests, a Metro spokesman said late Friday that the event was starting off relatively smoothly.

The carnival, spread out on the infield of Las Vegas Motor Speedway, attracted 134,000 attendees on its first day, according to figures released by Insomniac Productions, the event's organizer. According to early Insomniac estimates, 88,000 people had already arrived by 11:30 p.m. Friday.

Metro said it made eight other arrests, including six for misdemeanors and two for driving under the influence of alcohol. Only four attendees were ejected from the carnival, according to Insomniac statistics.

Authorities responded to 249 mostly minor medical calls. Five people were taken to local hospitals.

Metro also reported six traffic crashes.
