letter to the editor:

Democrats aren’t for the people now

The Nevada Democratic Party is in shambles. When doing my due diligence, it became clear I couldn’t support a single candidate for governor in the Democratic primary.

Democrats are forgetting what made them such an attractive party: the idea that they are fighting for the “little guy.” It wouldn’t be hard for the right Democrat to be massively popular here. Populism wins, and Reaganomics has been thoroughly discredited.

Why should we pay more in property taxes, sales taxes and gas taxes? Our public school system is among the worst in the nation, and we have a terrible mental health system, a comical minimum wage and high unemployment.

Regular people shouldn’t have to shoulder all of that responsibility when we have the enormously successful gold industry seemingly getting a free ride.

Nevada produces nearly 80 percent of the nation’s gold. To put that in perspective, if we were a country, we’d be the ninth-largest gold producer in the world. Mining companies are not paying their fair share.

Democrats need to quit acting like Republicans and start fighting for regular people again. With the amount of corruption in our government, I’m pessimistic.
