Two NLV families displaced after vehicle fire spreads to duplex

Fire

Two families were displaced tonight after a fire erupted inside a North Las Vegas duplex.

Capt. Cedric Williams said the blaze broke out about 6:45 p.m. in the 2100 block of Gilder Street, near East Lake Mead Boulevard and North 5th Street. Both families inside the duplex were home at the time and escaped without injuries.

One of the units, which was occupied by two adults and five children, was deemed a total loss. The other unit, occupied by a mother and daughter, had only smoke damage.

Investigators believe the fire broke out in a vehicle parked under a carport attached to the building.

Volunteers with the American Red Cross are helping both families find temporary housing.
