letter to the editor:

Minimum wage is insufficient

I support President Barack Obama’s attempts to raise the national minimum wage to $10.10 an hour.

Much of our Las Vegas community lives in poverty. Many working families have adults who work multiple jobs. Working families live paycheck to paycheck.

I feel like those with the power to create jobs and pay decent salaries have taken advantage of our community.

When families can’t live on the minimum wage, our entire community will pay in the long run. We will all pay to cover surprise medical bills. We will all pay to cover food stamps. We will all pay to help parents and children in need. Meanwhile, the corporations are subsidized because they are not required to be fair to their own labor.

$10.10 is the very least we can do. $8.25, which is the current minimum wage in Nevada, is not fair for working families. Please support Obama in this effort to raise the minimum wage.
