In regard to the hoopla about patient transport by private and public ambulances, it is easy to infer Las Vegas Fire & Rescue Chief Willie McDonald is looking at considerable additional man-hours by simply expanding his department’s ambulance transportation.
Inquisitors, including Las Vegas’ journalists and even Mayor Carolyn Goodman, should participate in random emergency call ride-alongs to determine overall return on investment in both systems (from receiving a call to return to station).
They will surely find different pluses and a few minuses in patient stabilization, preparation for transportation, the ride and emergency room responsibilities. But major surprises might be a hidden sense of security, equipment, man-hours expended and relative overall costs.
