Two children injured in vehicle-bike accidents

Two children were injured today after being struck by vehicles while riding their bikes, according to Metro Police.

The accidents were unrelated but happened within minutes of each other.

The first was reported at 2:23 p.m. near Pollock Drive and Pyle Avenue in the southwest valley, Officer Laura Meltzer said. The injured juvenile was transported to a local hospital with an ankle injury, she said.

Three minutes later, at 2:26 p.m., police responded to a second vehicle-bike accident at Washington Avenue and Hollywood Boulevard, Meltzer said.

The juvenile involved in that incident was transported to University Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries to the arm, she said.

With summer vacation about to start, drivers and children should be on alert and mindful of one another, Meltzer said.

So far this year, pedestrian fatalities are down compared to last year, Meltzer said.

There were 22 pedestrian deaths by this time last year, she said. This year, 10 pedestrians have died, she said.

“Hopefully the message is getting out there that people need to watch out for one another,” Meltzer said.
