State sets date to start taking applications for pot dispensaries

CARSON CITY β€” The state has set Aug. 5 to begin accepting applications for medical marijuana businesses.

The state Division of Public and Behavioral Health announced today that applications will be accepted through Aug. 18. By law, the state was required to provide 45 days notice before accepting proposals.

The state has 90 days after the Aug. 18 deadline to make its decision.

Hundreds of applications have been submitted in Clark County, but the state has the final say on who gets a license.

Steve Cooksey of MedMen, a management and consulting firm on medical marijuana issues, said it was good news for patients waiting to buy marijuana. β€œIt’s been a waiting game,” he said.

The law allows 40 dispensary licenses in Clark County, 10 in Washoe County, two in Carson City and one each in the remaining rural counties. Local governments will determine where the businesses can be located.
