Warm weather delays opening of ski season on Mount Charleston

Snow sports enthusiasts looking to ride the slopes at the Las Vegas Ski & Snowboard Resort will have to wait a little longer.

The resort on Mount Charleston is postponing its planned Nov. 28 opening because of unseasonably warm weather and a lack of snow, resort spokeswoman Veronica Kawka said.

The resort is now scheduled to open Dec. 5, but the official opening date will depend on weather conditions, she said.

Though the resort has been making snow, the area has not seen much natural snowfall, Kawka said.

Mount Charleston has had 0.7 inches of snow this month, according to the National Weather Service.

October temperatures on Mount Charleston were about 6.6 degrees above normal, and temperatures this month have been about 2.5 degrees above normal, meteorologist Nathan Foster said.

The resort hopes to see more snow after Thanksgiving, Kawka said.

In the meantime, the resort is asking visitors to avoid walking on the runs in the area around the resort.

This week, the skies in the valley are expected to stay sunny and mostly clear, meteorologist Chris Stachelski said.

High temperatures are expected to remain close to 70 degrees this week, with lows in the 40s, according to the National Weather Service forecast.

There is a chance on Dec. 1 of rain and cooler weather moving into the valley and snow on Mount Charleston, Stachelski said.
