With usual starting quarterback Logan Hutchison ill for most of the week, Palo Verde had to turn to Graeson Vereen for Friday’s game at Shadow Ridge.

The results were the same. Palo Verde won its fourth game in its last five tries by routing Shadow Ridge 41-7. Vereen managed to throw a touchdown pass to Ty Fuller in one of his two passing attempts for the typically ground-focused Panthers.

“It’s nice to have both those guys,” Palo Verde coach Darwin Rost said. “They are two different type of guys, but we can count on both of them.”

The Panthers can also rely on Jaren Campbell, who had another big game with 124 yards and two touchdowns on 16 carries. Fuller, Aaron Chisolm and Anthony Romero added rushing scores.

Vereen and Isaac Woods took interceptions off of Shadow Ridge, which scored its only touchdown after Dominick Wilson set it up with a 54-yard rush.

“They came out like gangbusters in the second half,” Rost said. “They are a senior-loaded, tough team so it’s nice to get a win off of them.”
