Two Greenspun Media Group websites have been named finalists for Editor & Publisher’s EPPY Awards, the top honor in online journalism.

The sites, lasvegasweekly.com and vegasinc.com, were selected in the categories of Best Entertainment Website with less than 1 million unique monthly visitors and Best Business/Finance Website with less than 1 million unique monthly visitors, respectively.

Lasvegasweekly.com, the online complement to GMG print publication Las Vegas Weekly, will compete with sites from Honolulu, Hawaii, Lawrence, Kan., Milwaukee and Sarasota, Fla. Vegasinc.com, the digital companion to GMG’s weekly print business digest, VEGAS INC, was one of only two finalists, along with Kiplinger.com: Your Business Channel.

The Weekly site is competing for its second EPPY in two years, having won last year for best redesign of a site with less than 1 million unique monthly visitors. Vegasinc.com was a finalist in last year’s business/finance class.

“We’re thrilled that our sites have once again been chosen as finalists for this honor,” said Ric Anderson, managing editor of the GMG newsroom. “Our owner and publisher, Brian Greenspun, has had a longstanding commitment to serving our audiences with exceptional digital journalism and progressive websites, and it’s always rewarding when our efforts are recognized in such a prestigious contest.”

GMG received two other EPPYs last year for lasvegassun.com’s “Grace Through Grief” series, which chronicled the emotional and physical recovery of a father and his two sons over the course of a year after a home invasion in which the man’s wife and daughter were killed and he was severely injured. The project tied with the Boston Globe’s coverage of the Boston Marathon bombing for best news or event feature, and it also won for best use of photography.

This year’s EPPY Awards will be presented in 33 categories, with winners chosen by the E&P staff along with 78 judges. The contest drew more than 400 entries. Now in their 19th year, the awards honor media-affiliated online journalism in three classes — sites with a million or more monthly unique visitors, sites with fewer than a million monthly unique visitors and collegiate sites.

In related news, the Las Vegas Review-Journal was named a finalist for Best Daily Newspaper Website with 1 million monthly unique visitors or more.

The award winners will be announced a week from today.
