Sierra Vista clinched a Division I-A Southern Region playoff spot Friday night despite a 39-27 loss at Pahrump Valley, which finished the season undefeated at home only to be left out of the playoffs.

Yes, that all really happened.

Pahrump Valley went 4-0 at home this season, beating Bonanza, Western, Cheyenne and Sierra Vista, but the Trojans finished 4-5 overall and 3-4 in the Division I-A Sunset to narrowly miss the playoffs.

Sierra Vista (6-3, 4-3) will begin the I-A Southern Region playoffs at home against upstart I-A Sunrise contender Chaparral at 7 p.m. Thursday.

“We would have liked to have won, would have liked to tie for first (in league),” Sierra Vista coach John Foss said. “But our kids fought back and battled hard.”

The Mountain Lions got three rushing touchdowns from Maliek Broady and another rushing TD from Andrew Peterson, Foss said.

“We’re very happy to be in the playoffs,” Foss said. “A young team, for the most part, and we made a lot of progress this year. We hope to have success in the playoffs.”

Multiple attempts to reach Trojans coach Joe Clayton were unsuccessful.
