Las Vegas Weekly, VEGAS INC websites take top honors

The websites for Las Vegas Weekly and VEGAS INC have taken top honors in Editor & Publisher’s prestigious EPPY Awards.

The sites, lasvegasweekly.com and vegasinc.com, were awarded EPPYs in the categories of Best Entertainment Website with less than 1 million unique monthly visitors and Best Business/Finance Website with less than 1 million unique monthly visitors, respectively. The online publications are produced by Greenspun Media Group, whose titles also include the Las Vegas Sun and The Sunday. GMG’s sites are the most-honored in Nevada, and the company has won EPPYs for five years straight.

Editor & Publisher announced this year’s award winners today, a week after revealing the finalists.

“In online journalism, winning an EPPY is the equivalent of winning an Oscar or an Emmy,” said Brian Greenspun, CEO, publisher and editor of GMG. “There’s simply no higher honor, and we’re thrilled to once again be among the award winners. We thank the judges and Editor & Publisher for recognizing our team’s hard work and creativity.”

GMG won for both of the publications it entered in this year’s contest. Last year the company garnered three EPPYs, one to lasvegasweekly.com for best redesign of a site with less than 1 million unique monthly visitors and two to lasvegassun.com for its “Grace Through Grief” series. That special project documented the recovery of a family victimized in a deadly home invasion.

“We take immense pride in being recognized among the most elite digital journalism organizations in the world,” said Ric Anderson, managing editor of the GMG newsroom. “It’s a testament to the talent of our staff, and to the commitment of everyone in our company to provide our audiences with exceptional sites and content.”

Lasvegasweekly.com competed with sites from Honolulu, Hawaii, Lawrence, Kan., Milwaukee and Sarasota, Fla. Vegasinc.com was one of only two finalists, along with Kiplinger.com: Your Business Channel.

“We’re a team at GMG, and this is a proud day for all of us,” said Donn Jersey, publisher of GMG’s interactive publications and The Sunday. “We’re excited about where we are, but also about where we’re going in providing products for our readers and for our advertising partners.”

The EPPY Awards, now in their 19th year, were presented in 33 categories, with winners chosen by the E&P staff along with 78 judges. The contest drew more than 400 entries from around the world.
