Morefield, Cimarron blank Bonanza to end regular season

Derek Morefield had two touchdowns both passing and rushing to help Cimarron-Memorial wrap up the regular season with a 47-0 home win over Bonanza tonight.

Morefield completed 5 of 8 passes for 103 yards, including TD strikes of 35 yards to Channing Reagan and 25 yards to Maurice Bennett, Spartans coach John Parcells said. Morefield also had touchdown runs of 2 and 8 yards to help Cimarron end the regular season 4-5 overall and 2-2 in the Division I Northwest.

Cimarron is the No. 3 seed from the Northwest and will open the Division I Sunset Region playoffs at Southwest No. 2 seed Palo Verde at 7 p.m. Nov. 7.

“(Morefield) is a great kid, a three-year starter,” Parcells said. “He’s focused in. We’re excited with where he’s at going into the playoffs. It’s why we cater the offense to his skills.”

Cimarron dominated in every facet. The Spartans held the Bengals to minus-4 yards rushing on 17 carries, three first downs in the game and 14-for-26 passing with two interceptions.

Parcells said Cimarron got 118 yards on nine carries from Armond Whitney, who ran for touchdowns of 42 and 7 yards.

Tyree Riley rushed for 78 yards on seven attempts, including a 52-yard touchdown, and Bennett added 48 yards on eight carries for Cimarron.

The Spartans also got two interceptions from Joe Tito, and Stone Stevenson blocked a punt.

Bonanza finished 0-9.
