Taliban hit Afghan government HQ in east, kill 12

KABUL, Afghanistan — Afghan officials say a Taliban attack on a government compound in the country's east has killed at least 12 people and wounded 80.

The assailants first set off two massive truck bombs, followed by an attack by gunmen in the provincial capital of Ghazni early on Thursday morning.

Khan Pacha Shirzad, a police commander in the city of Ghazni, says one of the truck bombs killed eight off-duty police officers who were asleep in their housing unit near the site.

Health official Zia Gul Esfandi says three policemen and one civilian were also killed in the attack. Provincial Gov. Musa Khan Akbarzada says at least 80 people were wounded, many of them by shattered glass.

The officials said 13 attackers were killed. The Taliban have claimed responsibility for the attack.
