Demonstrators plan to hold a May Day rally Friday in downtown Las Vegas to honor the working class and call attention to a collection of minority issues ranging from immigration reform to the country's intensifying tension between police and communities of color.

Local activists are using social media and blogs to organize the march at 4:30 p.m. at the Sahara Commercial Center on East Sahara Avenue near South Maryland Parkway.

Crowds will converge to "demand justice and dignity" to minority groups and unionized workers, organizer Liz Hernández said.

Local activists have been holding May Day demonstrations for nearly a decade in downtown Las Vegas, and the annual event typically draws hundreds of participants.

In recent years, the group has focused primarily on immigrant rights. Local groups have also used the event to protest government corruption in Mexico.
