Kickoff time

Las Vegas Sun sports reporters Ray Brewer and Case Keefer spend some extra time on the three biggest games of the week — Arbor View at Desert Pines, Chandler (Arizona) at Bishop Gorman and Liberty at Saint Louis (Hawaii) — before getting to their full picks. They also discuss the hypothetical first pick of a high school football fantasy draft.

Defense always figured to be the strength of this year’s Mojave team.

But even coach Joe Delgado may not have anticipated the Rattlers would play as impenetrably as they did Friday night. Mojave completely shut down Chaparral in a 25-0 victory to open the season.

“Our defensive backs did not give up anything long and our guys up front did a great job of containing their speed,” Delgado said.

The defense served as offense at times too. Senior Alex Carvalho lived every defensive lineman’s dream when he scooped a fumble and returned it for a 21-yard touchdown.

Carvalho added an interception to his career night with senior Jaylon Delgado also picking off a pass. Delgado had a long return to set up a touchdown and also caught four passes for 70 yards.

Junior Taiwan Braden tallied three catches for 40 yards. Senior quarterback LJ Cunningham threw for 122 yards on 7-for-11 passing and scored a rushing touchdown.

Junior Nick Kline, 91 yards, and senior Elijah Smoot, 50 yards, also picked up scores on the ground.

“There is still lots to work on but I’m very happy with our performance tonight,” Delgado said.
