Woman found dead after fire at east valley apartment

An elderly woman was found dead in an east valley apartment building where a fire broke out late this morning, according to the Clark County Fire Department.

The fire was reported about 11:50 a.m. in a second-story unit at Canyon Pointe Apartment Homes, at 5421 E. Harmon Ave., near Boulder Highway, Deputy Fire Chief Jon Klassen said in a news release.

After the fire was under control, firefighters found the woman in the apartment where the fire originated, officials said.

The Clark County Coroner’s Office will release the cause and manner of death.

Another person of unknown age and gender was treated at the scene for smoke inhalation, Klassen said.

The fire affected multiple units in the 18-unit, three-story building; none of the units were habitable, the fire department said.

The American Red Cross of Southern Nevada is helping 17 families affected by the fire, the organization said via Twitter.

The cause of the fire and a damage estimate have not yet been determined, Klassen said.
