Coach Tim Chambers laughs during UNLV baseball practice at Earl E. Wilson Baseball Stadium Tuesday, Feb. 10, 2015. The UNLV baseball team hosts Nebraska to open the season on Friday.

Tim Chambers’ bad back will require another surgery.

The UNLV baseball team's respected coach will undergo a second procedure on his back this week, forcing him to miss an undisclosed amount of time in the dugout, the university announced today.

The fifth-year coach, who is the reigning Mountain West coach of the year, is expected to return before the end of the season. Associate head coach Stan Stolte will serve as the interim head coach.

Chambers coached through pain during the 2012 season and struggled to do the basics of hitting grounders for infield practice. He had spinal fusion surgery after the season to insert pins and rods, and immediately felt better.

Last season, he coached UNLV to the Mountain West regular season title and an NCAA Tournament appearance.
