Event offers chance to get rid of unwanted prescription meds

Are unwanted prescription medications cluttering your cabinets?

A prescription pill turn-in event will be held from 8 a.m. to noon Saturday at Cimarron Memorial High School, 2301 N. Tenaya Way in Las Vegas. People with unused, expired or unwanted prescription medications can anonymously drop off their pills for proper disposal by law enforcement.

The goal of the event is to rid the community of excess medications to prevent prescription drug abuse.

The event is being hosted by the CARE Coalition, PACT Coalition and the Clark County School District Police. The CARE and PACT coalitions are Las Vegas-based organizations dedicated to preventing substance abuse.

CINTAS will offer free document shredding on site as well.

“We’re seeing more and more youth take prescription pills that aren’t prescribed to them, so they can study more, lose weight or numb emotional pain,” Anna Cedro, executive director of the CARE Coalition, said in a statement. “Family members and friends are becoming the new drug dealer to youth, most of the time without ever knowing it.”
