What Could Have Been and What Shall Be

UNLV football kept things close with Boise State until it didn't, and now sports writers Case Keefer and Taylor Bern say eclipsing the 2.5 season win total very much relies on this week's game against a Hawaii team that just fired its coach. In basketball, Las Vegas Sun sports editor Ray Brewer tries to explain why he's so confident in this year's team and ends up just yelling about how a really good Utah State team isn't any good.

Rebels junior guard Daquan Cook has been suspended for the nonconference season, or at least 13 games, following an arrest Sunday on a count of driving under the influence, it was announced Tuesday. UNLV will re-evaluate his status at the start of conference play on Dec. 30.

“Very disappointed in Daquan but also disappointed for Daquan," UNLV coach Dave Rice said before Tuesday's practice. "He’s worked extremely hard and put himself in a position to be ready to play and made a serious mistake. He understands there’s a responsibility when you put a UNLV uniform on and he failed in that regard.”

Cook, 20, was arrested in Las Vegas and booked at the Clark County Detention Center, according to UNLV and jail records. No additional details were immediately available.

The Clark County District Attorney's Office said Tuesday it must wait for toxicology results before filing any charges. Results can take months in some cases.

The Baltimore native missed all of last season because of a torn ACL and entered this year expecting to compete for some backup minutes at point guard. In 53 career games, including two starts, Cook has averaged 1.2 points in 6.5 minutes per game.

"We’re fortunate we have a lot of depth at the point guard spot," Rice said. "Very happy with the job that Jerome Seagears is doing, Patrick McCaw can play there and Jalen Poyser has been a good player as well."

Cook participated in Tuesday's practice and will contribute to the scout team until the Rebels decide whether he'll play this season.

"We’ll sit down and talk going into conference play and see if he’s earned his way back," Rice said.

Rice also announced that junior forward Ben Carter suffered a concussion in Saturday's closed-door scrimmage at USC. Carter, a Bishop Gorman High grad, won't play in Friday's exhibition game against Whittier, but the Rebels are hopeful he'll return to practice early next week.
