Man in wheelchair in critical condition after being struck at bus stop

A 72-year-old man is in critical condition after his motorized wheelchair was struck by a car in front of a bus stop in the eastern part of the valley Saturday evening, according to Metro Police.

Also according to police:

The incident occurred at 7:31 p.m. as a 2004 Saturn Ion was traveling west in the left lane of Bonanza Road through the intersection of Eastern Avenue.

A 2009 Chrysler 300 in the left turn lane of eastbound Bonanza Road was preparing to make a U-turn at the Eastern Avenue Intersection when the left front of the vehicle entered the travel lane of the Saturn.

The Chrysler struck the left side of the Saturn, pushing the Saturn to the right, off the road and onto a raised curb and sidewalk bordering the edge of Bonanza Road.

The right front of the Saturn hit a motorized wheelchair in front of the Regional Transportation Commission bus stop. The man in the wheelchair was taken to University Medical Center with critical injuries.

The driver of the Saturn was suspected of driving under the influence and was taken to the Las Vegas Detention Center for more testing. The Chrysler's driver was not suspected of impairment.

The collision remains under investigation.
