Palo Verde coach Joe Aznarez saw a different side of his team Friday night in a 51-14 victory over Shadow Ridge.

The Panthers led only 17-7 at halftime but came out of the locker room angry after giving up a late touchdown in the first half and scored their remaining 34 points in the third quarter.

“We wanted to set the tone,” Aznarez said. “They came out fired up. Homecoming might have had something to do with it.”

Defense sparked the rally when Chauntez Thomas had a long interception return for a touchdown. On the next drive, Kameron Toomer scooped a fumble and returned it more than 60 yards for a touchdown.

Aaron Chisolm, Pearson Schroll and Christian Bell also scored in the rout to snap a four-game Palo Verde losing streak. The Panthers now stand at 2-4 on the season with the Mustangs dropping to 0-7.

“We felt like we had a monkey on our back with all of the close losses,” Aznarez said. “It was nice to have one where we didn’t have to sweat much. I’m happy to be out of September, and playing in October.”
